Welcome back to 2026 – and what a year it’s already shaping up to be

As we return from the summer break, I want to extend a warm welcome to our IYM community and say how excited I am about the year ahead. There is a real sense of momentum right now - not just for IYM, but for the future opportunities opening up for young women across New Zealand.

One of the strongest signals we’re seeing is the growing importance of the STEMM sector. These industries are no longer “future focused”; they are happening now, and they are actively looking for talented, curious, and ambitious young people to step in and lead.
Recent government-backed initiatives are a great example. New manufacturing programmes are being developed to give students hands-on experience and clear pathways into skilled, well-paid careers.
At the same time, investment into emerging fields like quantum technologies shows just how wide the horizon really is - from advanced research to real-world problem solving that will shape how we live, work, and connect in the years ahead.
What’s especially exciting is the growing recognition that women must be part of this future. Organisations like Wāhine in Forestry are challenging old stereotypes and showing that women belong, and thrive, in sectors once seen as male-dominated.
These pathways offer not just jobs, but long-term growth, leadership opportunities, and the chance to make a genuine impact.
At IYM, our role is to help young women see these possibilities, often before they see them in themselves. Confidence, curiosity, and courage are just as important as technical skills, and they can be learned.
2026 is full of potential. We can’t wait to explore it with you.
