IYM Online 2024

Delivered with our sponsor Chorus, IYM Online 2024 is open to young women in Years 11 and 12 from all over New Zealand. Delivered entirely online, participants are exposed to the wide range of research and career opportunities available in STEMM through our engaging and interactive programme.

Programme Information

IYM Online 2023 with Chorus will take place in the April 2024 school holidays over five half-day weekday sessions. They will be delivered from 15 – 19 April 2024. There are 100 places available for Year 11 and 12 young women from all over New Zealand. 

Although delivered entirely online, IYM Online 2024 with Chorus will be an interactive and engaging experience featuring:

  • Virtual tours of laboratories and other spaces in universities, Crown Research Institutes and businesses.

  • Inspiring career panels led by women working in STEMM.

  • Interactive sessions where researchers and innovators showcase their research and work.

  • Hands-on sessions, team-building and networking sessions using digital technology.

  • An Innovation Challenge where participants work in teams led by an industry expert mentor.

Some of the IYM Online with Chorus 2022 highlights were:

  • Innovation Challenge where student teams designed and pitched innovative renewable energy solutions to judges from Chorus, FMG and FNZ.

  • NIWA (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research) presentation covering climate modelling, Antarctic oceanography and marine ecology.

  • Research showcase and virtual lab tours with staff and students from Victoria University of Wellington’s Faculty of Science.

  • Interactive GIS session creating data-based maps with Lauren McArtney from Eagle Technology.

  • Innovation and entrepreneurship session with the founders of Eight360 and Spiral Software, and GNS Science’s Commercialisation Advisor.

  • Keynote address from Dr Sabine Bellstedt, Research Associate, International Centre of Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) and Hari MogoÈ™anu, Executive Director, New Zealand Astrobiology Network (NZAN) exploring the journey of the universe and the origins of life on earth.

  • Inspirational address from GirlBoss founder and changemakeher Alexia Hilbertidou on closing the gender gap in science and technology.

Programme structure

IYM Online 2024 with Chorus will be delivered entirely online via Zoom and Google Classroom over five half-day sessions. These are likely to take place from 2.00pm – 6.00pm each day. Our goal is for all participants to take part in each of the sessions but all will be recorded so anyone who is unable to, will be able to view them in their own time.

How to apply

Applications open on 1 November 2023 and close on 15 March 2024

Applicants can apply online through our website. To ensure fair representation from high schools across New Zealand, we will admit the first three applicants from each school to the programme. The rest of the applicants from that school will be placed on a waiting list.

There is a small $30 GST inclusive participation fee for IYM Online 2024 with Chorus.

 

To gain the most benefit from the programme, participants will require a home internet connection and a laptop or computer.
