It’s the end of an era

How do you say thank you and farewell to someone who was instrumental in bringing Innovative Young Minds to life back in 2017?

Allan Brown is, in the words of a fellow trustee, an absolute legend.

From a simple idea first discussed at a Rotary meeting, Allan helped turn a vision into reality.

He played a pivotal role in establishing a partnership with the Hutt City Council and securing pilot funding that enabled the launch of the first IYM programme.

He also convinced his wife, Trish, to take on the inaugural Treasurer role, helping lay the financial foundations that have supported the IYM Charitable Trust’s growth and success.

Over the past decade, Allan has generously volunteered his time, ideas, networks and expertise, helping guide the Trust from its earliest days into a respected organisation that has inspired hundreds of young women and gender-diverse students to explore futures in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation.

Together with an extraordinary community of trustees, volunteers, educators, sponsors and industry partners, Innovative Young Minds has grown into a platform making a real difference in the lives of young people.

His commitment, enthusiasm and unwavering belief in the potential of young people have left an enduring mark on the Trust and the many alumnae whose lives have been enriched through its programmes.

Looking back, Allan still can’t quite believe how far the organisation has come.

“I can’t believe that we’ve been able to survive 10 years, and fund the programme through all of that time. It certainly hasn’t always been easy.”

While stepping down from the Board, Allan is confident the future of the Trust is in excellent hands.

“I think it’s the right time for a new generation to shape the future of the Trust. The people on the Board today are incredibly capable and enthusiastic, and I have every confidence in them.”

Asked for his parting words, Allan’s focus remains firmly on the young people the Trust exists to serve.

“I encourage everyone involved to keep working together, to continue sharing their passion for technology and science, and to encourage more young people from their schools and communities to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.”

As Allan steps aside from governance, he leaves behind much more than a successful organisation. He leaves a culture of collaboration, innovation and belief in young people that will continue to guide Innovative Young Minds into its next chapter.

Thank you, Allan. It has been a privilege to work alongside you. Your legacy lives on through the many young people whose futures have been influenced by Innovative Young Minds, and in the passionate Board, volunteers and supporters who will continue building on the foundations you helped create.
