Innovative Young Minds Satellites are short-format STEMM experiences for Year 11 and 12 students, online or in person. Students go inside real workplaces, meet the people who work there and see what the day actually looks like.

What is a Satellite?
We launched Satellites in our tenth year to reach more students, more often. Some focus on a single organisation, others take in several workplaces across an area. Either way, students meet the people doing the work and see what the day actually looks like.
Short and focused
Two hours online, or a day in person. Enough to change how a student sees their options, without a week away from school.
Real workplaces, real people
Tours, panels, and hands-on activities led by the technologists, scientists, and engineers who work there every day.
Open to all
Satellites are open to Year 11 and 12 students. Each programme has its own details, which we confirm when applications open.
Online, or in person
Satellites run in two formats, designed to reach students wherever they are in New Zealand.

How Affinity Medical Imaging Satellite went

In June 2026, we partnered with Affinity Medical Imaging to give students from across New Zealand an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at a working medical imaging clinic, all from the comfort of home.
During a two-hour live Zoom session, students took a virtual tour, exploring facilities and technologies that most people only encounter as patients. Participants gained insights into X-ray, CT, Ultrasound, MRI and Nuclear Medicine imaging, hearing directly from the Medical Imaging Technologists, Radiologists and Sonographers who use these technologies every day.
The session also introduced students to a range of career pathways within the profession, sparking a lively Q&A where the imaging panel fielded questions about study options, day-to-day work and what it's really like to build a career in medical imaging.

IYM Satellite Wairarapa
There is far more STEMM in the Wairarapa than most people realise. With Wellington NZ, we are building a one-day in-person Satellite that gets students out into local workplaces to meet the people running them.
